Selling marketing services to therapy practices: how to run the discovery call

How do I sell marketing services to a therapist or private practice?
Start with the practice, not the marketing: how full the caseload is, which clients they want more of, and how people find them today. Clinicians are wary of anything that feels salesy and must follow their own ethics and privacy rules, so explain plainly what you will do, what you will not do, and how they will see the results.
What is Amotions AI?
Amotions AI is a real-time private AI sales coach that delivers in-call guidance, AI roleplay, and post-call scorecards—trained on the customer’s playbook. It does not join meetings as a bot.
Why clinicians buy differently
Many practice owners trained as clinicians, not business owners. They may feel uneasy about marketing at all, and they are good listeners who notice when they are being handled. A fast, pushy pitch usually ends the call.
They also work within rules most local businesses do not: professional ethics codes, privacy obligations around client information, and in some cases insurance panel requirements. A seller who understands that earns trust quickly.
Questions to ask first
•
“How full is your caseload right now, and how full would you like it?”
•
“Which clients would you like more of: a specialty, private pay, a certain age group?”
•
“How do most new clients find you today? Directories, referrals, search, insurance lists?”
•
“When someone enquires, what happens next, and how quickly do they hear back?”
•
“What have you tried for marketing before, and how did it feel?”
The last question matters. Many clinicians have tried something that felt wrong for their profession. Knowing that tells you what not to suggest.
“I’m already full.”
This is common, and it is not always a no. Ask: “Are you full with the clients you want to see, at the rate you want?” Some practices are full but want more private-pay clients, a specific specialty, or enough demand to add an associate.
If they are full and happy, say so and leave the door open. Do not invent a problem.
Testimonials and reviews
Many professional codes restrict testimonials. The APA Ethics Code, for example, says psychologists do not solicit testimonials from current therapy clients. Other licences have their own rules.
If your offer includes reviews or social proof, ask the clinician what their licensing board allows and design the work around it, for example professional credentials, approach and specialties instead of client stories. Raise this before they do; it shows you understand their world.
Privacy and enquiry forms
A contact or intake form may collect health information. Ask how enquiries are handled today and what tools the practice already uses for client records and messages, and make sure your forms and follow-up fit the practice’s own privacy obligations.
You do not need to give legal advice. Say clearly what information your forms collect and where it goes, and suggest they check anything unusual with their own adviser.
Presenting the offer
Tie each part of the offer to something they said: “You said private-pay clients for anxiety are who you want more of. The site and search work focus on how those people search.”
Say the price once, then stop. Clinicians are used to silence; let them think.
End with a clear next step and a date, not “let me know”.
How Amotions AI helps on these calls
Upload your call plan, your offer and how you answer “I’m already full”, testimonial and privacy questions. During the call on Zoom, Google Meet, Teams or a phone call from your computer, a private panel shows which questions you have not asked yet and suggests an answer when a concern comes up, in your words. The clinician never sees it, and it does not join the call as a bot.
After the call, check talk and listen time and pace in the report. On these calls, the clinician should talk more than you until you present the offer.
Frequently asked questions
Q1.
How do therapists usually find new clients?
A.
Often through referrals, therapist directories, insurance panels and search. Ask each practice, because the mix varies a lot.
Q2.
Can I use client testimonials in a therapist’s marketing?
A.
Check the clinician’s ethics code and licensing board first. Many restrict or forbid soliciting testimonials from current clients.
Q3.
How long should a discovery call with a practice owner be?
A.
Around 30 minutes works for many offers. Spend at least half of it on the practice, caseload and how clients find them.
Q4.
Can AI coach me during the call?
A.
Yes. Amotions AI shows private prompts from your own playbook during the call. See AI sales coach for web design and SEO agencies.
