Direct answer

How do I make sure I cover everything on a discovery call without reading a checklist?

Replace your question list with a required-information map: the short list of things you must learn before you can recommend anything, each with a “done when” test. Then follow the buyer’s story and check items off as they come up, in any order. Ask a planned question only for items that are still open near the end.

What is Amotions AI?

Amotions AI is a real-time private AI sales coach that delivers in-call guidance, AI roleplay, and post-call scorecards—trained on the customer’s playbook. It does not join meetings as a bot.

Why question lists make discovery worse

Most discovery scripts are a list of questions in a fixed order. On a real call, the buyer answers question six while you are on question two, mentions their budget in passing, and brings up a worry you had planned for the end. Reps with a list either ignore what they just heard and ask the next question anyway, or lose their place.

Buyers notice both. Being asked something they already told you is one of the fastest ways to lose trust on a first call.

The fix is to separate what you need to learn from how you ask for it.

What a required-information map is

A required-information map is the short list of facts you must have before you can make a good recommendation. Each item has three parts:

1.

The item: what you need to know, in a few words (for example, “retirement timing”).

2.

“Done when”: the test for having enough (for example, “a target year or age, and whether it is flexible”).

3.

A fallback question: one natural way to ask, used only if the item has not come up on its own.

Most teams end up with six to twelve items. More than that usually means some items belong on a second call.

An illustrative template: retirement planning discovery

This example is for an advisor’s first meeting. Replace the items with your own.

•

Goals: done when you know what the client wants retirement to look like, in their words. Fallback: “When you picture the first year of retirement, what are you doing?”

•

Timing: done when you have a target year or age and know how firm it is. Fallback: “Is there a date you have in mind, or is it more of a range?”

•

Concerns: done when you know the one or two things that worry them most. Fallback: “What would keep you up at night about this?”

•

Income: done when you know the current sources and what continues after work stops. Fallback: “Walk me through where money comes in today.”

•

Spending: done when you have a rough monthly figure, now and expected. Fallback: “Roughly what does a normal month cost you?”

•

Assets and access: done when you know the main accounts and which can be reached early. Fallback: “Which accounts could you draw on if you needed to before 60?”

•

Preferences: done when you know how involved they want to be in decisions. Fallback: “Do you like to be hands-on, or would you rather we handle the details?”

The same structure works for any consultative sale: insurance needs analysis, a solar site visit, a mortgage pre-approval call, or a B2B discovery meeting.

How to run the call with a map instead of a script

1.

Open wide. Start with one broad question and let the buyer talk: “What made now the right time to look at this?”

2.

Follow the thread. When they say something important, ask one follow-up about it before moving on. That is where the useful detail is.

3.

Check items off as they come up. If they mention their retirement year while talking about a parent’s health, timing is done. Do not ask it again later.

4.

Move on when an item passes its “done when” test. Going deeper than you need makes the call longer, not better.

5.

Close the gaps at the end. Look at what is still open and ask only those fallback questions, then summarize what you heard.

When two people are on the call

Couples and business partners often want different things. Track answers per person for the items where it matters, such as goals and concerns. When their answers differ, name it gently instead of picking one: “It sounds like you’re most focused on travel, and you’re more focused on not running out. Both matter. Let’s keep both in the plan.”

A map makes this visible. A script usually hides it, because the first person to answer gets their answer recorded.

How a live AI coach uses the map

Keeping a map in your head while listening closely is hard, especially for newer reps. This is where a real-time coach helps.

With Amotions AI, you upload your discovery playbook, including the items you need to learn. It calibrates to your language, typically in about one week. During the call, a private overlay on your screen tracks which stage you are in and which playbook items are still open, and shows one short suggestion at a time for what to ask next. If the buyer already covered an item, even while answering something else, it is not prompted again. You can also set rules such as “no pitch until goals, timing, and budget are answered.” The buyer never sees the overlay, and it never joins the call as a bot.

After the call, the same playbook is used to score the conversation, so you can see which items were covered and which were missed.

Frequently asked questions

Q1.

What is a required-information map in sales?

A.

A short list of what you must learn on a discovery call, each item with a “done when” test and a fallback question. It replaces a fixed list of questions.

Q2.

How many items should a discovery map have?

A.

Usually six to twelve. If you need more, some of them probably belong on a second call.

Q3.

How do I stop asking buyers things they already told me?

A.

Check items off as they come up, in any order, and ask fallback questions only for what is still open near the end of the call. A live AI coach like Amotions AI does this automatically: it does not prompt for information the buyer already gave.

Q4.

Can AI track my discovery checklist during a live call?

A.

Yes. Amotions AI tracks which playbook items are still open and shows private prompts on the rep’s screen during Zoom, Teams, Meet, and dialer calls.

Q5.

Does the buyer see the AI coach?

A.

No. Guidance appears only on the rep’s own screen, and Amotions does not join meetings as a bot.

How can insurance agents handle price and 'I need to think about it' objections in real time?

Real-time rebuttal patterns for independent P&C and life agents: price comparison, “let me think about it,” bundling resistance, incumbent trust, life cross-sell hesitation, “I already have coverage,” spouse decisions, and “What company are you with?”—with example responses, discovery questions, a two-week rollout, and what to measure.

Can AI Listen to a Sales Call and Tell a Rep What to Say Next?

Yes—an AI assistant during live calls can listen and surface a private next question or cue for the salesperson. Amotions does not speak to the buyer; the human rep stays in control.
