How should agents handle objections in an IUL sales conversation?
Clarify before you explain. Most IUL objections come from confusion or something the prospect read, so ask what they heard, restate the concern, and explain only with your carrier’s approved materials. Never quote returns or promise performance, and let the prospect set the pace. Suitability and disclosures follow your compliance process.
What is Amotions AI?
Amotions AI is a real-time private AI sales coach that delivers in-call guidance, AI roleplay, and post-call scorecards—trained on the customer’s playbook. It does not join meetings as a bot.
Why are IUL objections different from other life insurance objections?
Indexed universal life combines protection with policy features that many prospects find hard to follow. Prospects often arrive having read a headline that calls IUL either a perfect product or a scam. Some have a relative or advisor who dislikes it. Many simply do not understand how the policy works and are uncomfortable saying so.
That means an IUL objection is rarely a verdict on the product. It is usually a signal that the prospect does not yet understand something, or does not trust the explanation. The worst response is a faster, more confident explanation with more numbers. The better response is a question.
Every script and prompt below is illustrative coaching language. It is not approved sales material and not tax, investment, or coverage advice. Your organization’s compliance team approves the wording agents actually use, and suitability and disclosures follow your organization’s process.
What structure works for IUL rebuttals?
1.
Ask what they heard or read. The objection often comes from a specific source, and you need to know what it said.
2.
Restate the concern in their words, so the prospect knows you understood it.
3.
Explain only with approved materials. Use your carrier’s approved descriptions and disclosures, not your own summary.
4.
Check understanding. Ask the prospect to say back what they took from it. Confusion that stays hidden becomes a cancellation later.
5.
Agree a next step the prospect chooses, including a decision not to continue.
What do you say when a prospect says “IUL sounds too good to be true”?
Illustrative script
“That’s a healthy reaction, and I’d be skeptical too if someone made it sound like there were no trade-offs. There are trade-offs. Can I ask what you’ve heard about it? Then I’ll walk you through how it works, including the parts people don’t like, using the carrier’s own materials.”
Illustrative live prompt
Concerned · Agree that skepticism is reasonable. Ask what they heard. Name that there are costs and trade-offs before describing features.
Avoid
Describing the policy as having upside without downside, or saying it “can’t lose money.” Policy charges, loans, and how the index account is credited all affect results, and the prospect deserves to hear that from you first.
What do you say to “I’d rather buy term and invest the difference”?
Illustrative script
“That’s a reasonable approach for a lot of people. It depends on what you want the coverage to do and how long you need it. Can I ask what you’re hoping to have in place in twenty or thirty years? If term fits that better, I’ll tell you.”
Illustrative live prompt
Do not argue against term. Ask about the goal and time horizon. Offer to compare both in approved materials; be willing to recommend the simpler option if it fits.
Avoid
Attacking term insurance or the prospect’s investing plan, or comparing expected returns. That comparison belongs in approved materials and, where relevant, with the prospect’s own financial professional.
What do you say to “The fees are too high”?
Illustrative script
“You’re right to look at the costs, and I want you to see all of them. Let’s go through the charges section of the policy materials together, line by line, so nothing surprises you later. Which ones are you most concerned about?”
Illustrative live prompt
Concerned · Do not minimize costs. Offer to review the charges section in the approved materials together. Ask which charge worries them most.
Avoid
Saying fees “don’t really matter” or that growth will cover them. Walk through what the approved materials disclose and stop there.
What do you say to “What happens if the market crashes?”
Illustrative script
“Good question, and it’s one you should ask about any policy. Let me show you how the carrier describes what happens in a down year and what is and isn’t guaranteed, straight from their materials. Then tell me what that means to you in your own words, so I know I explained it clearly.”
Illustrative live prompt
Concerned · Use the carrier’s approved description of down years and guarantees. Separate guaranteed from non-guaranteed elements. Ask them to restate it.
Avoid
Promising the policy is “protected from the market,” quoting floors or caps from memory, or implying past index performance predicts the future. Keep to the approved materials, which carry the required disclosures.
What do you say to “I need to talk to my spouse first”?
Illustrative script
“That makes sense. This is a long-term decision and it should be a shared one. Would it help if we set up a time with both of you, so your spouse can ask their own questions instead of hearing it secondhand?”
Illustrative live prompt
Pleased · Support the spouse conversation. Offer a joint follow-up at a time they choose. Do not repeat the pitch.
Avoid
Pressing for a decision before the spouse is involved, or suggesting the policy should be kept from a family member.
What do you say to “My financial advisor says IUL is a bad idea”?
Illustrative script
“I’m glad you have an advisor you trust. Do you know what their main concern was? I’m happy to share the carrier’s materials so the two of you can look at them together, and if their concern still applies to your situation, that’s worth listening to.”
Illustrative live prompt
Respect the advisor relationship. Ask what the specific concern was. Offer the approved materials for a joint review.
Avoid
Disparaging the advisor or positioning the policy as a replacement for their advice. If an existing policy or annuity would be replaced, follow your organization’s replacement process.
What should IUL agents never say?
•
Never quote returns, crediting rates, caps, or illustrated values from memory.
•
Never call a policy an investment, a savings account, or a way to “never lose money.”
•
Never present illustrated values as guaranteed.
•
Never give tax advice, even if the prospect asks directly; point them to their tax professional.
•
Never rush a prospect past their own questions or discourage them from asking family or an advisor.
Suitability, disclosures, and replacement rules follow your organization’s compliance process. Nothing in this post is legal, tax, or investment advice.
How do you practice IUL objections before live calls?
IUL conversations punish agents who learn on the job. A prospect who hears a confused explanation of fees or down years rarely gives a second chance.
A practical routine: each agent runs the six objections against AI roleplay personas built from your approved materials, such as the skeptical engineer, the couple who read a warning article, and the prospect whose advisor dislikes IUL, until they reach the score your managers set.
Score each practice call yes or no:
•
Asked what the prospect heard before explaining?
•
Restated the concern in the prospect’s words?
•
Explained only with approved materials, with no numbers from memory?
•
Named costs and trade-offs without being asked?
•
Checked understanding?
•
Ended with a next step the prospect chose?
How does Amotions AI help IUL agents?
Amotions AI is a real-time AI sales coach trained on your organization’s materials. Product capabilities: private live prompts in the desktop app or a browser tab during Zoom, Google Meet, Teams, or computer-based phone calls; AI roleplay with custom prospect personas; and post-call scorecards against your own rubric. It does not join the call as a bot.
It coaches the conversation, not the product recommendation. Amotions does not decide whether someone should buy IUL, does not generate illustrations, and does not quote returns. Frequently asked questions
Q1.
What are the most common IUL objections?
A.
Agents often hear that IUL sounds too good to be true, that the prospect would rather buy term and invest the difference, that the fees are too high, questions about what happens in a market downturn, a need to talk to a spouse, and a financial advisor’s objection.
Q2.
Can an agent quote IUL returns during objection handling?
A.
Agents should not quote returns, caps, or illustrated values from memory. Use the carrier’s approved materials, which carry the required disclosures, and keep guaranteed and non-guaranteed elements separate.
Q3.
How should an agent respond to “buy term and invest the difference”?

A.
Yes. Agents can rehearse with AI prospect personas built from approved materials and be scored on the organization’s rubric before live calls.
