How do you score empathy on a sales call?
Break empathy into behaviors you can hear: noticing the buyer’s emotion, naming it, responding before moving on, and matching tone. Score each from 1 to 5 with a short example of what a 1 and a 5 sound like. Review a few calls a week and coach one behavior at a time.
What is Amotions AI?
Amotions AI is a real-time private AI sales coach that delivers in-call guidance, AI roleplay, and post-call scorecards—trained on the customer’s playbook. It does not join meetings as a bot.
Why score empathy at all
Most sales scorecards count activities: dials, meetings, talk time, and whether the script was followed. Those matter, but buyers decide based on how the conversation felt too.
Empathy is not a personality trait you either have or not. On a call it shows up as specific behaviors, and behaviors can be scored and coached.
A four-row empathy rubric
1.
Notices emotion. Picks up on hesitation, frustration, or excitement. A 1 talks straight past it; a 5 pauses when the buyer’s tone changes.
2.
Names it. Says what they noticed in plain words. A 1 ignores it; a 5 says something like “It sounds like the timing worries you.”
3.
Responds before moving on. Deals with the feeling before the pitch continues. A 1 jumps to features; a 5 asks a follow-up question first.
4.
Matches tone. Adjusts pace and energy to the buyer. A 1 stays fast and upbeat with a stressed buyer; a 5 slows down and softens.
Listen to the audio, not only the transcript
A transcript shows the words “that sounds great.” The audio shows whether they were said with warmth or impatience. Tone, pace, and pauses carry much of what empathy sounds like.
When you score, listen to at least the key moments: the first objection, the price, and the close.
How to coach it
Pick one row per week. Share two clips: one where the rep scored a 1 and one where a teammate scored a 5.
Practice the moment in roleplay with a buyer who is clearly worried, then check the next few real calls for the same behavior.
How Amotions AI approaches this
Amotions AI scorecards include MSCEIT-informed emotional intelligence criteria that analyze vocal tone and delivery from the call audio, such as warmth, confidence, and pacing, not only the transcript.
Teams can add their own criteria, like the rubric above, on every plan. Reps get the same empathy feedback after AI roleplay sessions, and during live calls a private cue can suggest slowing down when the buyer sounds unsure.
Scores are coaching tools, not a measure of someone’s character. Use them to talk about specific moments.
Frequently asked questions
Q1.
Can AI really measure empathy?
A.
It can score the behaviors that show empathy on a call, like noticing and responding to emotion. A manager should still review the moments behind the score.
Q2.
What is MSCEIT?
A.
An established model of emotional intelligence. Amotions uses it to shape scorecard criteria.
Q3.
Should empathy affect pay or performance reviews?
A.
Use it for coaching first. Scores are most useful for spotting moments to discuss.
Q4.
Can I use my own rubric?
A.
Yes. Custom scoring criteria are available on every plan.
Q5.
Does Amotions score empathy in roleplay too?
A.
Yes. Roleplay sessions get the same kind of feedback as real calls.
