Direct answer
How do I practice for a sales interview that includes a mock cold call or mock discovery call?
Treat the mock call as a scored sales call, because that is how the interviewer treats it. Build AI roleplay personas that act like the interviewer will, such as a skeptical VP or a busy director who says “just send me an email,” and practice until you can ask a second and third follow-up question on the same thread. Use each practice score and its feedback to choose your next rep, and keep live coaching tools out of the real interview.
What is Amotions AI?
Amotions AI is a real-time private AI sales coach that delivers in-call guidance, AI roleplay, and post-call scorecards—trained on the customer’s playbook. It does not join meetings as a bot.
Why the mock call round decides so many sales interviews
Many SDR, BDR and AE hiring processes now include a role play: a mock cold call for SDR roles, a mock discovery call for AE roles, and sometimes a short mock demo. The interviewer plays the buyer, and they are told to push back.
Candidates usually prepare their résumé story and their numbers, then walk into the mock call cold. That is backwards. The mock call is the one round where the hiring manager sees how you actually sell, and it is the easiest round to rehearse.
This applies whether you are an experienced enterprise AE between roles or a career changer moving into your first SDR job. The bar differs, but the scoring categories are the same.
What interviewers score in each mock call round
Opening: did you introduce yourself and the reason for the call clearly, in a few seconds, without reading a script at the buyer?
Earning time: did you give the buyer a reason to keep talking, and ask permission for a few minutes instead of assuming you have them?
Discovery depth: did you ask open questions, and did you follow the buyer’s answer with a better question instead of jumping to your pitch? This is where most candidates lose points.
Handling a brush-off: when the buyer said “not interested,” “we already have something,” or “send me an email,” did you stay calm, acknowledge it, and try one honest question before letting go?
Next step: did you ask for a specific next step with a day and time, or did the call just end?
For a mock demo, add one more: did you show only what connects to the problems the buyer described, rather than touring every feature?
Build interviewer personas in AI roleplay
Generic practice partners are too polite. Build personas that behave like interviewers told to test you.
The skeptical VP: senior, short on patience, and doubtful that your product category matters. Gives one-line answers and asks “why should I care?” Your job is to earn the next two minutes with a relevant reason, not a feature list.
The busy director: willing to talk but distracted and rushed. Answers questions honestly but briefly. Your job is to go deeper on one problem instead of skimming five.
The “send me an email” brush-off: tries to end the call in the first thirty seconds. Your job is to acknowledge the request, ask one question that makes the email worth reading, and agree on a time to follow up.
Give each persona a company type, a role, one real problem they will admit to if asked well, and one objection they will raise. That keeps the practice close to what a hiring manager will improvise.

Practice level 2 and level 3 follow-up questions
A level 1 question opens a topic: “How are you handling outbound today?” A level 2 question follows the answer: “You said the team is behind on pipeline. What happens when they miss a month?” A level 3 question finds the cost or the owner: “Who feels that most, and what have they already tried?”
Interviewers notice when a candidate asks a good first question and then abandons the thread to pitch. Following the thread shows you listen, and it gives you the material for a sharper next step.
A simple drill: in each practice call, pick one thread and stay on it for three questions before moving on. Use the buyer’s own words in your follow-up. If you catch yourself pitching after the first answer, restart the call.

An illustrative mock call exchange
This is an illustrative example written for this post, not a recording of a real interview or customer.
Persona: busy director of sales operations. Illustrative buyer: “We have a tool for that already. I have about two minutes.”
Illustrative candidate, level 1: “Understood, I’ll keep it short. How is the current tool working for your team?”
Illustrative buyer: “It’s fine. Reps just don’t use it much.”
Illustrative candidate, level 2: “When you say they don’t use it much, what do they do instead when they’re stuck on a call?”
Illustrative buyer: “Honestly, they ping their manager on chat, or they just wing it.”
Illustrative candidate, level 3: “And when they wing it, where does that show up for you? Is it in the forecast, or in deals that stall after the first call?”
Illustrative buyer: “Stalled deals, mostly. That’s what my VP keeps asking about.”
Illustrative candidate, next step: “That sounds worth twenty minutes with your VP’s question in mind. Would Thursday at ten or Friday at two work better?”
Notice what the candidate did not do: pitch after the first answer. The second and third questions turned “it’s fine” into a problem the buyer cares about, which made the next step easy to ask for.
Use the score and feedback to pick your next rep
After each practice call, look at the lowest category, not the overall number. If discovery depth is lowest, your next rep is the busy director with the three-question thread drill. If the next step is lowest, run the same persona again and force yourself to name a day and time.
Read the feedback on delivery too. In a mock call, sounding rushed or flat costs points even when the words are right. Practice slowing down on your opening and on your ask.
Re-run a persona until its weakest category improves, then switch personas. Variety matters more once the basics are steady, because a real interviewer will not follow your script.
A short prep plan for the week before the interview
Day 1: research the company’s buyers and write one persona for each likely mock call. Write a ten-second opener for each.
Day 2: run each persona once. Do not fix anything yet. Note the lowest-scoring category for each.
Day 3: drill discovery. Run the busy director several times with the level 2 and level 3 follow-up rule.
Day 4: drill brush-offs. Run the “send me an email” persona and the skeptical VP until you can stay calm and ask one honest question.
Day 5: drill next steps. End every practice call with a specific day and time.
Day 6: run a full mock call on each persona, back to back, as a dress rehearsal. Review the transcripts.
Day 7: rest, reread your notes, and prepare two questions to ask the interviewer about their sales process.
Practice before the interview, not during it
Use AI roleplay to prepare. Do not run live coaching or any real-time prompting tool during an actual job interview, and do not break any rule the interviewer or company sets for the process.
The point of the mock call round is for the hiring manager to see how you sell. If you get the job, you will be selling on your own skills, so build them in practice where it is fair and useful.

How Amotions AI approaches this
Amotions AI includes AI roleplay with custom buyer personas, so a candidate can build the skeptical VP, the busy director, and the “send me an email” brush-off described above. Each practice call gets a transcript, a 0–100 score against the rubric you set, and feedback on what to practice next.
Scoring looks at vocal tone and delivery, such as warmth, confidence and pacing, from the audio, not only the words in the transcript. Scorecards include MSCEIT-informed emotional intelligence criteria.
You can also upload a recording of a practice session you ran with a friend or mentor, as audio or a TXT, VTT or SRT transcript, and score it on the same rubric.
Once you are in the job, the same product gives private real-time guidance on live sales calls, visible only to you as an overlay on your Mac or Windows computer. It is not a meeting bot, it does not join calls, and it never speaks to the buyer.
The free Basic plan includes every Professional feature except custom AI agents, with limited usage. Details: https://amotionsinc.com/free-ai-sales-coach and https://amotionsinc.com/pricing
Frequently asked questions
Q1.
What is a mock call in a sales interview?
A.
It is a role play where the interviewer acts as a buyer and you run a cold call, discovery call or short demo. They score how you open, earn time, ask questions, handle pushback and ask for a next step.
Q2.
How do I get better at follow-up questions in a mock discovery call?
A.
Pick one thread and ask three questions on it before moving on, using the buyer’s own words. Practice this against an AI persona that gives short answers until it feels natural.
Q3.
What should I do when the interviewer says “just send me an email”?
A.
Agree, then ask one honest question that makes the email useful, and suggest a specific time to follow up. Practice this exact brush-off in roleplay before the interview.
Q4.
Can I use an AI coach during the actual interview?
A.
No. Use AI roleplay to practice beforehand, and follow the rules the interviewer and company set for the process.
Q5.
Can I practice a mock call interview for free?
A.
Amotions offers a free Basic plan that includes AI roleplay with custom personas, with limited usage. Plans are listed on the pricing page.
