What should financial advisors say to clients when the market drops?
When the market drops, advisors should listen before explaining. Acknowledge the client’s worry and ask what specifically concerns them. Then reconnect the conversation to the goals and time horizon in their plan. Agree on a concrete next step. Avoid predictions and promises. Clients remember how the call felt more than the chart you showed.
What is Amotions AI?
Amotions AI is a real-time private AI sales coach that delivers in-call guidance, AI roleplay, and post-call scorecards—trained on the customer’s playbook. It does not join meetings as a bot.
Why downturn calls go wrong
Under stress, advisors tend to lead with data: historical recoveries, charts, and reassurance. To a frightened client, that can sound like “you are overreacting.”
The client called because they feel anxious. Until that feeling is acknowledged, they will not take in the plan.
A four-step structure
1.
Acknowledge. “It makes sense that you’re concerned. Seeing the account drop is unsettling.” Say it plainly, without a “but.”
2.
Diagnose. “What worries you most right now?” The answer might be retirement timing, a child’s tuition, a spouse’s anxiety, or a headline. Each one needs a different conversation.
3.
Reconnect to the plan. Walk through the goals, time horizon, and risk tolerance you agreed on together, in the client’s own words if you have them. Discuss any changes within your firm’s process.
4.
Agree a next step. A follow-up date, a review meeting with their spouse, or a written summary. Clients feel calmer when they know what happens next.
Language to avoid
Do not predict the market or promise a recovery timeline. Do not dismiss the concern (“this always bounces back”). Follow your firm’s compliance guidance on performance discussions.
Bring the second spouse or partner in whenever you can. Many relationships are lost because the less-involved partner never heard the plan directly.
How Amotions AI approaches this
Amotions AI gives advisors private cues during client calls on Zoom, Teams, or the phone. If the advisor jumps to data before asking what worries the client, the cue suggests acknowledging and diagnosing first. It can also flag rising anxiety in the client’s voice.
Newer advisors can rehearse a panicked-client call with an AI client before a real downturn. Cues are trained on your firm’s approved language. Amotions does not give investment advice, approve compliance, or speak to clients.
The examples in this post are illustrative and are not investment or compliance advice.
