How do coaches run a discovery call that converts without feeling salesy?
A coaching discovery call converts when it diagnoses instead of coaching for free. Ask where the person is, where they want to be, and what has stopped them. Then reflect the gap back and make one clear invitation with the price stated plainly. Selling feels pushy when the offer comes before the person feels understood.
What is Amotions AI?
Amotions AI is a real-time private AI sales coach that delivers in-call guidance, AI roleplay, and post-call scorecards—trained on the customer’s playbook. It does not join meetings as a bot.
Why discovery calls feel salesy to coaches
Most coaches feel salesy for one of two reasons. Either they pitch before the prospect feels heard, or they coach for 45 minutes and then awkwardly bolt an offer onto the end.
The fix is the same for both. Treat the discovery call as a diagnosis. Your job is to help the person see their situation clearly enough to decide whether to get help. It is not to solve their problem in one free session.
A five-part discovery call structure
1.
Current state. “Tell me what is going on right now.” Let them talk. Write down their exact words.
2.
Desired state. “If we were talking a year from now and this had gone well, what would be different?” Push for specifics they could see or measure.
3.
Obstacles. “What have you already tried, and what got in the way?” Past attempts tell you what they will need from you.
4.
Cost of staying stuck. “What happens if nothing changes for another year?” Do not dramatize it. Let them name it.
5.
Invitation. Reflect the gap in their words, then describe how you work in two or three sentences and state the price.
Stop coaching for free
When a prospect shares a problem, the instinct is to help on the spot. One small reframe is fine. A full session is not. It removes the reason to keep working together.
A useful rule: ask questions that deepen their understanding of the problem, and save the questions that solve it for paid sessions.
Saying the price out loud
State the investment once, clearly, and then stop talking. For example: “The six-month program is [your price].” Do not add a discount, a justification, or an apology in the same breath.
Silence after the price is normal. It means the person is thinking. Wait, then ask, “What comes up for you when you hear that?”

How Amotions AI approaches this
Amotions AI gives coaches a private overlay during Zoom, Google Meet, or phone discovery calls. If the desired state or the cost of staying stuck has not come up yet, the cue keeps you in discovery. When the prospect’s voice shifts toward hesitation or excitement, a cue suggests slowing down and reflecting.
Before live calls, coaches can rehearse the price moment against an AI prospect at three difficulty levels. Amotions never speaks to the prospect, and the coach stays in control of every word.
The examples in this post are illustrative. Amotions does not publish enrollment-rate or income claims for coaches.
Frequently asked questions
Q1.
How long should a coaching discovery call be?
A.
Most coaches use 30 to 45 minutes. Long enough to cover all five parts, short enough that it does not become a free session.
Q2.
Should I share my price before the call?
A.
Either works. If you list it publicly, still restate it on the call after reflecting the gap.
Q3.
What if the person is clearly not a fit?
A.
Say so and refer them elsewhere. A clean no protects your reputation and your time.
Q4.
Can AI tell me what to say on the call?
A.
Amotions gives short private cues based on your own discovery flow. You decide what to say.
Q5.
Does Amotions record my coaching sessions?
A.
